Since the cancellation of the Apollo missions the U.S. Space Program has been plagued by constant cancellations, budget cuts and a lack of public awareness. Having worked at NASA since he was 18, on 8 Programs at 3 NASA Centers, he felt it was time to create a Tiger Team organization to assist.
SPAN was designed to be a student organization to provide services & assistance to NASA. In 1990 the first SPAN chapter was created at the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA. Later, a second chapter was founded at the Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, Prescott, AZ.
In the beginning SPAN performed outreach and education about NASA programs.
In addition, SPAN was designed to perform small engineering & science project NASA wanted but did not have the funding to perform.
The first small engineering project mushroomed into constructing the front of a Space Shuttle. But there was NO funding.
In 1992 the beginnings of the Shuttle structure was moved to Santa Maria under SPAN Headquarters. The project was then build by the founder, alone, without funding and on the wrong side of the continent from its ultimate destination.
